Equine ethology in practice

Equine ethology in practice

Ethology is the science of animal psychology and behaviour - how an animal perceives and interprets the world and how it interacts with its surroundings and with other animals, of the same and other species.

Natural horsemanship is the keeping, handling and training of horses based on equine ethology. In the picture, Welsh horsewoman and field ethologist Lucy Rees is watching a band of feral horses in the plains of Venezuela.

Observation is the start of getting to know horses and gives you clues to approaching them, as a first step in building a relationship.
