Wastewater Biofiltration
Plants in general have the capacity to clean the air and the water they metabolise, within limits. Wastewater biofiltration capitalises on this phenomenon, in using certain aquatic plants to purify domestic and industrial wastewater. Nitrates and phosphates are absorbed by the roots of many species, while metals and other contaminants can be trapped by the leaves of some species.
In our case, since we have dry toilets, there is no sewage and we filter only greywater, from the shower, kitchen sink, and washbasins. This makes for a smaller, simpler biofiltration sytem, but where sewage treatment is required, filtration can be coupled with oxygenation to achieve the same end result: water clean enough to bathe in.
